Rogar Gary
Roger Gary was born in Guyana, South America, where he attended South Georgetown Secondary School for his high school education. It was towards the end of his secondary education that he embraced the sport of badminton. Through his involvement in playing badminton, he became a member of the national team for four years. Within this time, he represented Guyana in Suriname, Trinidad, Barbados and Jamaica, respectively.
There was another side of Roger. This was the side of him that demonstrated signs of his love for art and fashion by his unusual and unpredictable creations at an early age. He attended the E.R. Burrowes School of Art in Guyana under to tutorage of the late Dennis Williams, and this experience was followed by his attendance to Jamaica School of Art in Kingston, Jamaica. While at Jamaica School of Art, he was encouraged to pursue his true calling and passion, fashion design. This he did when he later migrated to the United States. Upon his arrival in New York, he attended both Pratt Institute, and The Parsons School of Design, respectively. These foundational experiences resulted in his success as a fashion designer.
Roger is regarded as a Caribbean fashion icon who has honed his skills to create and produce some of the most elegant eveningwear, daywear and swimwear for his private clientele and fashion-forward customers. In essence, he has developed his collections that have become a successful international brand under the name, Roger Gary Designs.
Roger’s creations have caught the attention of both print and visual media outfits. In print media, his designs were featured in articles in Woman’s Wear Daily, NY Times, NY Daily News, Caribbean Life, Essence Magazine, Un Chin Magazine, British Pride, She Caribbean, The JC Report and others. Actually, he was the first designer to be featured at the original Fashion Café in Rockefeller Centre, NYC.
In visual media, Roger’s creations were featured on Fashion TV, BCD Instyle, Fox Ch.5, Brooklyn Ch.12, BET’s Spring Bling, BET’s Rip The Runway and the VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards.
Admirably, Roger’s collections have been showcased during New York Fashion Week, Brooklyn Fashion WeekEnd, Caribbean Fashion Week, StyleWeek Jamaica, Barbados Fashion Week, St. Kitt’s Fashion Week, Virgin Islands Fashion Week, Summer Sizzle British Virgin Islands, Guyana Fashion Xpo, The International Designer’s Show, Cayman Island Fashion Week and Kingston (Jamaica) Bridal Week.
To his credit, Roger has been recognized for his contribution to the fashion industry. Most recently, he was the recipient of the Latinista Award. He has also been recognized by The Guyana Cultural Association of New York, and the Caribbean Style and Culture for his exceptional and remarkable contribution to the Caribbean Fashion Industry.
It has been said that Roger’s fashion philosophy encompasses the totality of being a woman – the clothes and the woman become one. Wholesomely in control of the creative process to ensure the high standard of each garment, Roger believes in offering a quality product that has a touch of fantasy, where practicality and modernity are embedded.
